These days the Indian mobile phone market is flooded with non-branded mobile phone OEMs like Lava Mobile, Karbon Mobile, microMax mobile etc. These companies are giving the big guys a run for their money because of their feature rich phones that are available with a low price tag. Initially people use to get China made mobile phones but after the DoT went after them, the target market of Chinese phones have changed their preference and are buying phones from these guys, which are cheap, feature rich, look cool, have valid IMEI numbers and DoT does not ban them LOL!! Now one more OEM, Wynn Telecom is jumping into this game and has set-up up a brand expansion, supply chain and manufacturing budget of USD 107 million for the Indian market. This India based manufacturer currently has a manufacturing facility in Shenzen, China from where they import their handsets. There new facility will be based in Himachal Pradesh and will churn out 1.2 million handsets every month. If you see most of the small time mobile OEMs mentioned above are doing well as they have also been sponsoring big cricketing and other sports events in India. [Via]

jet.jpgJet is the newest smart phone from Samsung that has hit the Indian shores. Like its name, the Jet is a combination of a phone with smart phone like features and easy to use intuitive user interface. Samsung Jet was supposed to be launched in the last week of June but then it has been launched in the first week of July. After Omnia and Omnia HD, Jet is one more flagship smart phone from Samsung. The Jet will be priced around INR. 24,000 in India and some of its striking features include, TouchWiz 2.0 interface, motion sensing UI, customizable home screen widgets just like the Nokia N97 (Jet is much cheaper though). Jet features a 3D user interface with 3.1 inch WVGA, AMOLED touch screen, 800 MHz processor, GPS, A-GPS, 5 meg snapper with Face detection, smile detection, Geo tagging, blink detection, 3G HSDPA, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi. Even on the audio front the phone scores over most of its competitors in India with Samsung's DNSe sound engine, SRS WOW effects and 3.5mm standard headphone jack. Feature wise the phone sounds to be a winner lets see how it does in the retail market. By the way 7 more Samsung phones were supposed to come to India in July, one has come so 6 more to go.

Nokia is very much hope ful with the popularity of touch screens phones in India and that is the reason why the Finnish giant is slated to launch more and more touch screen phones in India in the coming months. By 2012, touch screen phones will account nearly 40% of the Indian mobile phone market and Nokia being a leader in phone market does not want to let go this opportunity. The craze of touch screen phones in India was started by the iPhone, which sadly didnt do well, and was fueled by the introduction of the Nokia 5800, which did well in the Indian market but it was not able to convert iPhone users to its own. Nokia's new touch screen handsets will start from INR 13,000 but the company is aiming to bring down this price to INR 10,000. I guess Nokia touch screen phones at this price point will have a lot of takers as Nokia is very strong in low and mid-range mobile phone market in India. [Via]

There is no one in this world who does not know what has happened in India in the last 3 to four days. India's commercial capital was taken under siege by some extremists who think that killing people and destruction are the only ways to prove their point. This time they took Mumbai under siege and attacked the biggest landmarks in Mumbai, The Taj and The Oberoi. Many people were killed including innocent Indians, brave policemen & military men and yeah obviously the fucking terrorists were also killed. This time India;s heart was attacked and the Indians are enraged. This attack proves only one thing, the people who have planned this attack do not want to see the current progress of India and the way it is becoming a developed country. Acts of terrorism should be banished and no country should experience acts like these. I am really proud to be an Indian and no act of terrorism can be a show stopper for India.

Blackberry Storm, the first full touch screen phone from RIM, will be hitting Indian shores in the month of December. Other regions that will see the launch of Blackberry Storm along with India include, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Vodafone will be bringing Blackberry Storm to India and the other regions. Vodafone also launched the iPhone in India but it didnt pick up pace in the market as it was priced way to high for the India customers. Vodafone is also planing to bring its entertainment and information services like Vodafone Music , Vodafone Live portal, Google Maps and Find&Go navigation, MySpace, YouTube, and Facebook to these countries along with the Storm. Out of these services, I guess, Facebook, YouTube are some of the entertainemnt services that Vodafone ought to bring to India. As per recent speculations, Blackberry Storms price in India would be somewhere between Rs. 30,000 to 35,000, which still make sthe phones pretty costly for most of the Indians but can be a good deal for enterprise customers who generally buy Blackberry phones in bulk.

N79

After the launch of N96 in India, one more Nokia N Series phone has made its way to the Indian market, its the Nokia N79. Like all the N Series devices of Nokia, N79 is made to enhance the music and multimedia experience of the user. Before the N79, N85 had also made its way in India. India has always been an important market for Nokia when it comes to N Series devices and phones like the N70, N72 and the N95 have done really well in the Indian market. may be that is the reason Nokia is launching N Series phones one after the other. Coming back to N79, The N79 is a stylish Candybar phone with N85 like features and is an enhancement of the N78. The phone has Xpress-on covers and users can choose from two front and five back color style covers, making the phone highly customizable in looks. The N79 has a FM transmitter, built-in GPS and 4GB of memory. The phone has a 5 mega-pixel snapper with Car Zeiss lens, dual LED flash and light for video recording. In India the phone will be priced at Rs. 22,900 and will come pre-loaded with 19 all time favorite club songs and music videos from the popular UK based band, Ministry of Sound. From the looks and specs, N79 seems to be a successor of its siblings the N73 and the N72, both of them have really done good in the Indian market.

According to Indiatimes Infotech, the iPhone 3g will be coming to BSNL by December 2008. The iPhone 3G was launched in India on August 22nd on AirTel and Vodafone. Also, BSNL will be launching its 3G network in India in the month of December same date as the launch date of the iPhone 3G on BSNL. This is really cool, considering the fact that, though Vodafone and AirTel launched the 3G iPhone, there was no 3G network in India to exploit the 3G capabilities of the iPhone and when BSNL launches it in December they would have their 3G network up and running, hopefully. But there is also a news in the market that, 3G network in India will be voice focused and not data focused. Are you kidding me??? 3G has to be data focused so that people can enjoy rich multimedia and internet services on the go. I hope this voice focus of the 3G network is some kind of rumor because Indians don’t want to feel unhappy once again. There is no news on BSNL’s pricing of the 3G iPhone, but I gues it will be less than the price point at which the iPhone 3G was launched initially.

3g iPhone 2

Both, AirTel and Vodafone launched the Apple iPhone 3G in much pomp and show in India on August 22nd 2008. The launch was a flop given the high price factor attached to the iPhone 3G. People were waiting for it but the high price was a dampener and people were pretty unhappy. But the only guys who are happy with the iPhone's official "high" price are the grey marketers. According to Economic Times, grey marketers would be selling the iPhone 3G at a price point of 20,000 to 22,000, which is pretty much affordable for Indians and they feel that the official price will drive people to them for buying the new 3G iPhone. I seriously fail to understand what AirTel and Vodafone were thinking when they fixed the price of the 3G iPhone for the Indian market. Didn't you guys EVER thought of grey market's existence in India. Who is to Blame???

Image representing iPhone 3G as depicted in Cr...
The iPhone 3G was showcased yesterday by AirTel here in Bangalore at their HQ on Banerghatta Road and today the company is launc9ing it is six main cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata and this number is going to increase to 65 cities across India.
iPhone 3G has dampened the spirits of Indians because of the high cost attached to it. AirTel has said that they are not making any profits by selling the iPhone 3G, they are just selling the network services. The Indian pricing of the iPhone has been fixed by Apple and not the service provider, which I don’t believe. Anyways, but one thing is sure that the service providers will earn a lot of money from the data services they would be providing the iPhone users in India. As you all know that, both, AirTel and Vodafone opened up pre-registrations for the iPhone 3G. According to AirTel they have received more than 200,000 pre-bookings but even they are not sure how many of these people who have pre-booked the iPhone will actually buy one. Is AirTel also thinking that the pricing has let most of the prospective buyers down?? By the way 2G iPhone is already penetrated the Indian market by taking the grey market route and there are 30,000 unlocked 2G iPhones running on AirTel’s own network. Will this affect Apple and AirTel’s relationship in India? Will Apple ask AirTel to shut down these phones? These are some of the questions that keep haunting me.

As we all know that the iPhone price is out in India and it costs a bomb in India. Many people including me are not happy with the iPhone 3G pricing in India. Don’t believe me, just check the conversations of people on Twitter regarding iPhone 3G’s pricing. Apple are you reading this, don't you feel that you are making a mistake by doing this and companies like Nokia and Samsung would be ready to add insult to the injury.

The biggest disappointment is going to come for people in India on August 18th 2008, the launch date of 3G iPhone in India. According to sources the iPhone 3G is going to cost Rs. 31,000 on Vodafone connection, much costlier than what it costs in the US. The phone will come 2G enabled in India and 3G will be disabled by default. Now, there is an ongoing debate whether the service provider activates the 3G free of cost once 3G spectrum goes live in India. The 16 GB model will cost around Rs. 34,000. Now who the hell is going to spend so much money, if this news is confirmed then I doubt whether there would be any takers for this gadget from Apple???

The iPhone 3G is just few days away from hitting the Indian shores, technically. I say technically because the old iPhone had already made its way to the country through the much preferred grey market route. Anyways, the new iPhone 3G will be launched in India in August and on 22nd it will be available with AirTel. I tried inquiring about the kind of pricing strategies and plans these guys(AirTel & Vodafone) are planning to implement for the new iPhone, but there was no success as both the companies are keeping mum about it. With 3G services launching soon in India, iPhone 3G will be used to its true potential. There are many people including me who think that iPhone is not the best mobile phone around. You will like iPhone only if you use it as a music player or a Internet browsing device. If you search about the uses of iPhone on the internet, you will come across many instances which point towards iPhone as a better Internet browsing device than a mobile phone. Like all Indians and mobile phone enthusiasts I am also waiting for the iPhone to launch in India and see how the initial reactions are and I am damn sure that it is going to rock the India mobile handset market.

Vodafone might not be the most preferred mobile service provider in India but their advertisements have always been a talk of the town. Their ads are pretty out of the box and have certainly helped the company is increasing its subscriber base in India. Also, one more interesting thing is that, these ads have also made the dog breed, “Pug” very much popular in India and there have been reports of Pug sales being increased after Vodafone started showing this dog in their advertisements. Enjoy these ads below; these are innocent advertisements that portray a very strong message.

As I had posted earlier, Vodafone is the first company to bring the iPhone in India, followed by AirTel. Yesterday, during his keynote address, Steve Jobs launched the new 3G iPhone in the US confirming that it will be available in 70 countries at the end of this year. Following Apple’s announcement about the new 3G iPhone, Vodafone has confirmed that they would be launching the 3G iPhone in Australia, Italy, NZ and Portugal on July 11. Vodafone has also confirmed that, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, India, South Africa and Turkey will be able to get their hands on the 3G iPhone by the end of this year.

Nokia launched the N78 and the N96 along with three other handsets at the MWC 2008. After the worldwide launch the N78 was launched yesterday in India. N78 is a multimedia computer that combines music, navigation and photography. The device, based on the S60 3rd Edition developer platform, features integrated A-GPS navigation, 3.2-megapixel snapper with Carl Zeiss optics, and support for a microSD memory card of up to 8 gigabytes to store music and media. The Nokia N78 device can also be used for "geotagging," the process of autotagging photos with location metadata. Using the ‘location tagging’ application present in the Nokia N78, users can automatically tag the location data to the picture they have clicked. This allows the users to save the pictures by date as well as by location coordinates. The devices will be available in India at a retail price of $466. The Nokia N78 is a perfect blend of music, camera and Internet and is one of the Nokia’s devices that will pioneer the idea of user-generated content. The Indian version of the N78 will come preloaded with maps of 8 cities and will also have information across 52 categories such as cafes, restaurants, hotels and more. It will also come with a three-month navigation license in India.

You can check-out the N78 preview here, manual here and commercials of N96 and N78 here.

Indians were still waiting for 3G mobile services when other countries are forgetting 3G and looking towards 4G mobile technologies. Its time for the Indians to be happy now as, India’s Union Minister of Technology and Communication has made it clear that 3G telecom services in India will be up and running at the end of this year.

I told you about the iPhone killer, HTC Diamond Touch being launched in India but there is one bad news, though the Diamond has HSDPA connectivity it will be launched in India without HSDPA and will only sport EDGE connectivity. Did your heart break??

I came across this interview in YouTube. This interview was taken by the famous Blogger and podcaster from India, Kamla Bhatt. This interview will give you an insight on the Indian mobile phone consumer who is behind the staggering statistics that define the Indian mobile phone user scenario.

There are many customers of Vodafone India who swear names on the company and are frustrated with the kind of service the company is providing. Even some of my friends are suffering being the customers of Vodafone. Now to add to this, Delhi State Consumer Commission has fines Vodafone $117,000 for fooling customers. Vodafone last year had launched a campaign where, if a subscriber is calling from his phone and his calls exceed more than 20 minutes per day, then he /she would be eligible for prizes ranging from gold coins to car. Now, this contest was not taken in right spirits by the Delhi State Commission and according to them this comes under unethical practice of minting money. The service provider even appealed against this but it failed and they have to pay the fine imposed upon them. Mobile service providers in India, sometimes harass people to the core with unnecessary tele-marketing calls, advertisements and contests, which nobody wins except the service provider. Fines like this will be helpful in keeping a check on such kind of mobile service providers.
