Jet is the newest smart phone from Samsung that has hit the Indian shores. Like its name, the Jet is a combination of a phone with smart phone like features and easy to use intuitive user interface. Samsung Jet was supposed to be launched in the last week of June but then it has been launched in the first week of July. After Omnia and Omnia HD, Jet is one more flagship smart phone from Samsung. The Jet will be priced around INR. 24,000 in India and some of its striking features include, TouchWiz 2.0 interface, motion sensing UI, customizable home screen widgets just like the Nokia N97 (Jet is much cheaper though). Jet features a 3D user interface with 3.1 inch WVGA, AMOLED touch screen, 800 MHz processor, GPS, A-GPS, 5 meg snapper with Face detection, smile detection, Geo tagging, blink detection, 3G HSDPA, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi. Even on the audio front the phone scores over most of its competitors in India with Samsung's DNSe sound engine, SRS WOW effects and 3.5mm standard headphone jack. Feature wise the phone sounds to be a winner lets see how it does in the retail market. By the way 7 more Samsung phones were supposed to come to India in July, one has come so 6 more to go.
Nokia is very much hope ful with the popularity of touch screens phones in India and that is the reason why the Finnish giant is slated to launch more and more touch screen phones in India in the coming months. By 2012, touch screen phones will account nearly 40% of the Indian mobile phone market and Nokia being a leader in phone market does not want to let go this opportunity. The craze of touch screen phones in India was started by the iPhone, which sadly didnt do well, and was fueled by the introduction of the Nokia 5800, which did well in the Indian market but it was not able to convert iPhone users to its own. Nokia's new touch screen handsets will start from INR 13,000 but the company is aiming to bring down this price to INR 10,000. I guess Nokia touch screen phones at this price point will have a lot of takers as Nokia is very strong in low and mid-range mobile phone market in India. [Via]

After the launch of N96 in India, one more Nokia N Series phone has made its way to the Indian market, its the Nokia N79. Like all the N Series devices of Nokia, N79 is made to enhance the music and multimedia experience of the user. Before the N79, N85 had also made its way in India. India has always been an important market for Nokia when it comes to N Series devices and phones like the N70, N72 and the N95 have done really well in the Indian market. may be that is the reason Nokia is launching N Series phones one after the other. Coming back to N79, The N79 is a stylish Candybar phone with N85 like features and is an enhancement of the N78. The phone has Xpress-on covers and users can choose from two front and five back color style covers, making the phone highly customizable in looks. The N79 has a FM transmitter, built-in GPS and 4GB of memory. The phone has a 5 mega-pixel snapper with Car Zeiss lens, dual LED flash and light for video recording. In India the phone will be priced at Rs. 22,900 and will come pre-loaded with 19 all time favorite club songs and music videos from the popular UK based band, Ministry of Sound. From the looks and specs, N79 seems to be a successor of its siblings the N73 and the N72, both of them have really done good in the Indian market.

Both, AirTel and Vodafone launched the Apple iPhone 3G in much pomp and show in India on August 22nd 2008. The launch was a flop given the high price factor attached to the iPhone 3G. People were waiting for it but the high price was a dampener and people were pretty unhappy. But the only guys who are happy with the iPhone's official "high" price are the grey marketers. According to Economic Times, grey marketers would be selling the iPhone 3G at a price point of 20,000 to 22,000, which is pretty much affordable for Indians and they feel that the official price will drive people to them for buying the new 3G iPhone. I seriously fail to understand what AirTel and Vodafone were thinking when they fixed the price of the 3G iPhone for the Indian market. Didn't you guys EVER thought of grey market's existence in India. Who is to Blame???

iPhone 3G has dampened the spirits of Indians because of the high cost attached to it. AirTel has said that they are not making any profits by selling the iPhone 3G, they are just selling the network services. The Indian pricing of the iPhone has been fixed by Apple and not the service provider, which I don’t believe. Anyways, but one thing is sure that the service providers will earn a lot of money from the data services they would be providing the iPhone users in India. As you all know that, both, AirTel and Vodafone opened up pre-registrations for the iPhone 3G. According to AirTel they have received more than 200,000 pre-bookings but even they are not sure how many of these people who have pre-booked the iPhone will actually buy one. Is AirTel also thinking that the pricing has let most of the prospective buyers down?? By the way 2G iPhone is already penetrated the Indian market by taking the grey market route and there are 30,000 unlocked 2G iPhones running on AirTel’s own network. Will this affect Apple and AirTel’s relationship in India? Will Apple ask AirTel to shut down these phones? These are some of the questions that keep haunting me.

You can check-out the N78 preview here, manual here and commercials of N96 and N78 here.

Indians were still waiting for 3G mobile services when other countries are forgetting 3G and looking towards 4G mobile technologies. Its time for the Indians to be happy now as, India’s Union Minister of Technology and Communication has made it clear that 3G telecom services in India will be up and running at the end of this year.
