att-3g-iphone.jpgAT&T has gone contract free for the 3G iPhone. Initially when AT&T launched the 3G iPHone for the first time in US, the 8GB and the 16GB versions costed $199 and $299 respectively, under contract. But now was they have removed the contract obligation both these versions of the iPhone will now cost $599 and $699 respectively. AT&T had announced this when they launched it but now they have confirmed the availability. So there is a catch here, AT&T has removed the contractual obligation, does this mean that, they are getting ready for the new iPhone, which most probably will be coming in June 2009. This is just a speculation from my side but thats what this news is pointing toward. By the way, sources from LG Korea have confirmed that, they are working on OLED screens for Apple for the new iPhone and Apple's first touch screen Notebook.

Here is how you take an instant screenshot with your iPod Touch or iPhone. You don't need any software for doing that. Just hold down the Back Button or your menu button and press the power button at the top of your device, a flash will appear and the screenshot has been taken and saved to your Saved Photos folder. This is so cool and easy to use. This is not a hack but an in-built shortcut by Apple.

BSNL_iPhone

Indian mobile services provider, BSNL would the first to launch its 3G services in India in the month of December 2008. According to some reports and NAMP that came out in the second week of September, BSNL was supposed to launch the 3G iPhone along with the launch of 3G services. The 3G iPhone has really not picked up in the Indian market mainly because of its high-pricing and non-availability of the 3G spectrum and the news of BSNL bringing iPhone on its 3G spectrum is turning out to be false because as of now, Apple has no intentions of tying up with BSNL for the launch of its 3G iPhone on BSNL's 3G services. Apple has already bent its rule of sticking to single player for a country by going ahead in India with AirTel and Vodafone. As we all know what fate the 3G iPhone met in India, I mean people are buying it but it never gained speed in the lucrative Indian mobile phone market. The 3G iPhone mania is slowly dying down in India and now people are looking forward to upcoming phones like the Nokia Tube, Blackberry Bold, Blackberry Storm, Samsung Omnia etc. With the absence of 3G iPhone in its portfolio, BSNL will have tough time luring users towards it 3G services.

3g iPhone 2The much awaited iPhone 3G was launched in India on August 22nd and the bad days of Apple, Vodafone and AirTel started on the same day. Price of the iPhone 3G was and is one of the biggest factor that had a negative impact on the iPhone launch and the sentiments of the Indian mobile phone user. Non-availability of 3G spectrum, other limitations of the iPhone 3G were some of the other factors that fueled the downtrend of the iPhone 3G in the Indian market. What was Apple thinking when they came up with this kind of pricing for the iPhone. AirTel and Vodafone sold just 1500 iPhones in first two weeks of the launch. This figure is really embarrassing for  a company like Apple who had broke all records with the US launch of the 3G iPhone. iPhone 3G's dismal performance in the Indian market has led these things, which nobody would have imagined:

  • AirTel and Vodafone selling the iPhone 3G on EMI
  • Vodafone lowering down the price of 3G iPhone by 1500 bucks in just one month of its launch
  • AirTel is also rumored to lower the price of the 3G iPhone
  • AirTel will not air any more ads on the Television now and they have told their media agencies not to do anything for atleast coming three months

Just imagine the situation if Apple would have launched the iPhone for 20,000, rest everything would have been history. Anyway, now the damage is already done but one thing is sure that Apple has failed to crack the most lucrative mobile phone market in the world and that is the fact.

3G will soon become a reality in India because according to PC World India, DoT has announced that 3G spectrum auctions will be conducted in India by December 30. DoT will conduct 66 auctions including 22 each for GSM, CDMA and Broadband Wireless access. So there is equal opportunity for everyone. DoT had earlier announced that it would be conducting auction for the licensing 3G spectrum in India. A date for 3G auctions points towards the fact that, 3G will soon be a reality in India, which has a market, flooded with 3G enabled phones. iPhone 3G was launched on August 22nd in India but many people were disappointed as there is no 3G in India to exploit the 3G capabilities in the iPhone. With 3G auctions kicking-off this December, the disappointed users of 3G iPhone will have a reason to cheer.

In its move to tackle the consumer disappointment that happened when the iPhone 3G’s prices were announced, Vodafone has plans to lower down the iPhone prices plus the company has tied up with banks so that people can buy the “Costly” iPhone 3G on EMI, good move. Vodafone has tied up with Axis and Barclays and will make the iPhone available in six or twelve equal monthly installments and ICICI Bank is also on the line to sign a contratc with Vodafone. The banks are also benefiting from this as users have to buy the iPhone using the credit card of these banks only but the interest rate on the credit card EMI will be lower than what they will pay on normal credit card bills. It seems that Vodafone has realized that cost factor attached to the iPhone will hamper the sales and that is the reason the company is coming up with schemes within few days of the launch….is AirTel sleeping or is just overconfident???

3g iPhone 2 AirTel and Vodafone have started selling the costly 3G iPhone in India. AirTel has even started advertising the iPhone 3G on national television. The ad, which is being aired from last two days shows how an iPhone 3G helps its users to manage Work Calendar, Work Emails and Work contacts. The commercial never highlights the multimedia capabilities of the iPhone 3G or not even the multi-touch interface, which is very surprising. From the commercial it is pretty much evident that AirTel is pitching the iPhone 3G for business users. Is this the right thing cause today's business user of mobile phones demands robust enterprise devices like the BlackBerry or the Nokia E90 or say the Nokia E71 and certainly not the iPhone.

Image representing iPhone 3G as depicted in Cr...
The iPhone 3G was showcased yesterday by AirTel here in Bangalore at their HQ on Banerghatta Road and today the company is launc9ing it is six main cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata and this number is going to increase to 65 cities across India.
iPhone 3G has dampened the spirits of Indians because of the high cost attached to it. AirTel has said that they are not making any profits by selling the iPhone 3G, they are just selling the network services. The Indian pricing of the iPhone has been fixed by Apple and not the service provider, which I don’t believe. Anyways, but one thing is sure that the service providers will earn a lot of money from the data services they would be providing the iPhone users in India. As you all know that, both, AirTel and Vodafone opened up pre-registrations for the iPhone 3G. According to AirTel they have received more than 200,000 pre-bookings but even they are not sure how many of these people who have pre-booked the iPhone will actually buy one. Is AirTel also thinking that the pricing has let most of the prospective buyers down?? By the way 2G iPhone is already penetrated the Indian market by taking the grey market route and there are 30,000 unlocked 2G iPhones running on AirTel’s own network. Will this affect Apple and AirTel’s relationship in India? Will Apple ask AirTel to shut down these phones? These are some of the questions that keep haunting me.

As we all know that the iPhone price is out in India and it costs a bomb in India. Many people including me are not happy with the iPhone 3G pricing in India. Don’t believe me, just check the conversations of people on Twitter regarding iPhone 3G’s pricing. Apple are you reading this, don't you feel that you are making a mistake by doing this and companies like Nokia and Samsung would be ready to add insult to the injury.

HSBC, the world’s local bank, is I think not happy with Research In Motion (RIM). Till now HSBC corporate employees use to have BlackBerry as their preferred device for communication and perform their daily business related tasks while on the move but now, if latest report from CNET is to be believed then, HSBC is on the verge of ordering 200,000 iPhone for their staff and replace the BlackBerries. If this thing happens then, it will be a big setback for RIM. Also, there is a divided house on the use of iPhone as a corporate device or enterprise phone.

The iPhone 3G is all set to launch in big Asian countries like India, Singapore, and Japan. One country that is missing from the list is China. Apple and China’s biggest telecom operator, China Mobile had started their talks to bring the iPhone 3G to China. These talks somehow didn’t succeed and the reasons are now known to anyone officially, rumors were flying that Apple was not able to agree to the terms that China Mobile had put forward. According to the latest reports from the iPhone Freak, Apple and China Mobile have resumed talks and are now discussing practical issue involved in the deal. Now, in this deal China Mobile is the one who is stronger and has the ability of dictate terms as it is one of the best service provider across China and it has a subscriber base of 300 million people, just imagine even if 10% of these subscribers have an iPhone, Apple will be more than happy. It seems that these negotiations are going on for a long time and a consensus needs to be reached for both the companies.
