Nokia has launched one more low cost phone, the Nokia 2710. The USP is that this one is the cheapest GPS phone that is available in the market at the price point of 110 Euros or INR 7,500 . Navigation as a service is being used by a lot of people on their mobile phones, especially in developed as well as developing nations. With this phone, Nokia has targeted the user who don't want to shell out much cash to buy costly phones which have a navigation feature. This phone will come loaded with Nokia Maps and has straight line navigation with an integrated digital compass. It has turn by turn navigation with voice guidance feature. With this phone, Nokia is targeting mobile users in developing countries like India. One more smart move from Nokia is that, it has incorporated some maps which can be accessed even if there is no connectivity to the GPS or Internet (Nokia will incorporate local maps of the region where it is selling the phone). The maps will be pre-loaded on the 2GB memory card, which comes with the phone. Nokia will also be giving a car kit kit that includes, car charger as well as a car cradle. Other features include, 2.2 inch screen, access to Ovi store, 2 meg snapper, Instant messaging, Ovi Mail and 18 day stand-by mode when fully charged. The phone will be available in Q2 2010. Check out the promotional video of the Nokia 2710.

Since last one and half year, Nokia's focus has been in the integration of multimedia, Internet and entertainment into its mobile devices. Now the company will focus more on two areas, navigation software and messaging software. Navigation and location based services have always been one of the main focus areas of Nokia and now messaging has been added to the list with Nokia Messaging client coming into most of today's Nokia high-end smart phones. Nokia is also been promoting its Ovi mail among existing Nokia users around the world. Nokia already has competitive edge over companies like Apple and Sony Ericsson when it comes to navigation and the company aims at expanding its portfolio of navigation services. Acquisition of companies like Navteq have added to Nokia's competency of navigation and location based services. Nokia will focus on applications for its high-end smart phones.

Since 2007, Nokia has invested as well as restructured itself in such a way that it churns out devices that are best suited for users who look for entertainment from their mobile phones. Whether it is Internet, multimedia, navigation, music and other entertainment form like gaming. Over the last two years Nokia concentrated on music, maps, media, messaging and games but now the company wont be investing much in these areas. The investment levels will drop as compared to the previous year. Of course we know the reason, the current economic recession. Its not thta falling investment levels point toward Nokia's interest going down in these 5 content areas. Nokia will drive its initiative to become a global leader in Internet on mobile and focus on building customer base and loyalty in these areas. So in the coming days Nokia now will not come up with some break through or entirely new things but focus on enhancing its portfolio and how it can deliver value to the customer.

Apart from the E55 and the E75, Nokia announced the successor of its 6210 Navigator named Nokia 6710 Navigator. This phone focuses more on in-car navigation and pedestrian guidance. Maybe Nokia learnt some lesson from the poor in-car navigation of the Nokia 6210 and made this amendments. Nokia 6710 comes with the latest Nokia 3.0 maps applications with a 5 mega pixel snapper. You can also geo-tag your snaps, I guess this is becoming a must-have function for all phones equipped with Navigation capabilities.
Ovi Store:
Apart from the three phones, Nokia also announced its Ovi store that will offer users a lot of content, which will be based on their locations and preferences. The content that will be offered in the Ovi Store will range from rich applications, games to widgets fro smart phones. The store will be live from May and Nokia users with S40 and S60 devices can make use of various applications and products available on this store. This is Nokia's version of its App Store. Nokia has also opened up this store for developers so that they can showcase their applications on this store and earn 70% of the money, which comes from the sale of the applications they have developed. This strategy will encourage more and more developers to develop applications for Nokia phones and make their presence felt on the Ovi Store.

The location based services and navigation products market in India is heating up with companies launching products like GPS/Navigation units and mobile phones that complement this market. Nokia and Garmeen are putting lot of efforts in order to grab a share in the Indian location based services and navigation market. With Tata Indicom coming up with location-based service, we will soon see CDMA phones with GPS and navigation functionality.

The new UI of the application also offers satellite images. At last Nokia has made use of it’s acquisition of Navteq, cause Nokia Maps 2.0 has vector maps that are provided by Navteq. From last two years Nokia is very keen on becoming a company that provides Location based services and with this kind of applications, Nokia is getting closer to becoming one and once in a while, acquisitions like Navteq also help.
I have a thought, which is lingering in my mind from quite sometime and needs to come out, with these kind of map and navigation applications coming, we humans will forget to use your brain to search a place. When you are in a new city, finding places is like an opportunity to talk with locals and increase social contact but these application will quickly give you whatever you are looking for…then what bout our social contact?????
Anyways, Download Nokia Maps

People from Nokia’s Location Based Services have confirmed that Nokia navigation phones will focus on pedestrians rather than drivers. By the way this, I think is Nokia’s way to increase its foot print in the Location Based Services Market…cause if you give it a thought there are more pedestrians in this world than vehicles. Also Nokia bought Navteq to get a form hold in the navigation services market. Nokia wants its users to add content to the maps. Way to go Nokia…but Navigation is the key…
