With mobile subscribers from rural parts of India showing a steady growth, both, mobile OEMs and mobile services providers that their strategies are aligned to this market and they provide products and services, which cater to their needs. OEMs like Nokia have launched a lot of new services and products that appeal to the Indian rural mobile user. In the similar way, AirTel has launched a new service center initiative in the rural belt of Karnataka. Getting help on mobile services has always been a pain for the rural customers and in order to tackle this issue, AirTel will be setting up AirTel Service Centers in main markets across villages in Karnataka. These service centers will be equipped with personnel who will help rural subscribers with their problems/queries with respect to AirTel's mobile services. This is a good move by AirTel as it will facilitate quick servicing of rural subscribers and also help AirTel in increasing their footprint in the rural region. AirTel is anyway a market leader in GSM services. [Image belongs to: The Hindu]
After both BSNL and MTNL launched their 3G services in India, its time for the number one mobile service provider, AirTel to jump into the game of 3G in India, which is getting delayed hell lot of times. Bharti Airtel has said that if everything goes well as planned they would be launching 3G services in India by October 2010. The auctions for the 3G spectrum @ 3,500 Crore INR will get done by November. AirTel will have the spectrum by next year Jan or Feb and then they would be launching their 3G services in India. 3G, which has become an old story in many countries, has reached India very late. Though BSNL aggressively promoted it 3G services and also entered into partnerships with leading mobile handset players, its 3G services failed to generate any uptake. This is not surprising because most of the people who use BSNL use their phones just for making calls and sending SMS, 3G where as gives you fast Internet and lots of mobile Value added services in your hand but majority of Indian consumers are yet to get used to this use of mobile phones. In big metro cities, AirTel's 3G will pick up given its user base and people's knowledge about 3G and its advantages.

After the rural mobile phone users in India crossed the 100 million mark, the AirTel is the one to cross the 100 million mark in the Indian mobile phone market. AirTel, India's leading mobile services company, has reached 102.37 million subscribers.Bharti AirTel commands 32% of the market and is followed by Vodafone Essar, BSNL and IDEA who command 24%, 16% and 15% of the market respectively.Among the rest, Aircel from Southern part of India has one of the highest growth rate in terms of market share. The company has come up with aggressive marketing strategies and has roped in Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador, who is a hot property these days dues to his boyish charm and gentleman like charisma. AirTel is way ahead of its nearest competitor Vodafone in terms of market share and both the companies invest heavily in marketing strategies with their ads leaving a lasting impressions on a viewers minds.
Indian mobile services provider, BSNL would the first to launch its 3G services in India in the month of December 2008. According to some reports and NAMP that came out in the second week of September, BSNL was supposed to launch the 3G iPhone along with the launch of 3G services. The 3G iPhone has really not picked up in the Indian market mainly because of its high-pricing and non-availability of the 3G spectrum and the news of BSNL bringing iPhone on its 3G spectrum is turning out to be false because as of now, Apple has no intentions of tying up with BSNL for the launch of its 3G iPhone on BSNL's 3G services. Apple has already bent its rule of sticking to single player for a country by going ahead in India with AirTel and Vodafone. As we all know what fate the 3G iPhone met in India, I mean people are buying it but it never gained speed in the lucrative Indian mobile phone market. The 3G iPhone mania is slowly dying down in India and now people are looking forward to upcoming phones like the Nokia Tube, Blackberry Bold, Blackberry Storm, Samsung Omnia etc. With the absence of 3G iPhone in its portfolio, BSNL will have tough time luring users towards it 3G services.

N96 comes with many pre-bundled high-end applications, multimedia and gaming content, which will help it in penetrating the Indian market in a better way than the iPhone. The Indian version of the N96 comes with pre-loaded Bollywood movie, Om Shanti Om, evergreen Hindi and English soundtracks (100 each), 3 N Gage games, 50 music videos and maps of India, UAE, Singapore and 3 months license for navigating 8 cities in India. All this multimedia content coupled with beefed up memory (16GB onboard + 8GB microSD card support) will help the N96 do better in the Indian market. Nokia’s N Series devices have always done well in the Indian market because of the young Indian generation fueling the sales of these devices.
Like the iPhone 3G, there were pre-booking for the N96 in India and according to company people the response was encouraging. For booking the N96 you have to pay Rs. 4000 in advance and according to Nokia, the pre-booking of N96 is better than what it was for the N95. Also, the prices of Nokia devices come down soon in the Indian market, for example, the N95 8GB is now available for Rs. 22,000 (it started retailing around 30,000). In the past 18 months, 10 million Nokia N95s were sold in India. Though, functionality wise, the N96 looks to be a very promising device, pricing is something, which is very high from an Indian customer’s point of view and might act as an initial roadblock in the sales of this device.
The much awaited iPhone 3G was launched in India on August 22nd and the bad days of Apple, Vodafone and AirTel started on the same day. Price of the iPhone 3G was and is one of the biggest factor that had a negative impact on the iPhone launch and the sentiments of the Indian mobile phone user. Non-availability of 3G spectrum, other limitations of the iPhone 3G were some of the other factors that fueled the downtrend of the iPhone 3G in the Indian market. What was Apple thinking when they came up with this kind of pricing for the iPhone. AirTel and Vodafone sold just 1500 iPhones in first two weeks of the launch. This figure is really embarrassing for a company like Apple who had broke all records with the US launch of the 3G iPhone. iPhone 3G's dismal performance in the Indian market has led these things, which nobody would have imagined:
- AirTel and Vodafone selling the iPhone 3G on EMI
- Vodafone lowering down the price of 3G iPhone by 1500 bucks in just one month of its launch
- AirTel is also rumored to lower the price of the 3G iPhone
- AirTel will not air any more ads on the Television now and they have told their media agencies not to do anything for atleast coming three months
Just imagine the situation if Apple would have launched the iPhone for 20,000, rest everything would have been history. Anyway, now the damage is already done but one thing is sure that Apple has failed to crack the most lucrative mobile phone market in the world and that is the fact.
Both, AirTel and Vodafone launched the Apple iPhone 3G in much pomp and show in India on August 22nd 2008. The launch was a flop given the high price factor attached to the iPhone 3G. People were waiting for it but the high price was a dampener and people were pretty unhappy. But the only guys who are happy with the iPhone's official "high" price are the grey marketers. According to Economic Times, grey marketers would be selling the iPhone 3G at a price point of 20,000 to 22,000, which is pretty much affordable for Indians and they feel that the official price will drive people to them for buying the new 3G iPhone. I seriously fail to understand what AirTel and Vodafone were thinking when they fixed the price of the 3G iPhone for the Indian market. Didn't you guys EVER thought of grey market's existence in India. Who is to Blame???
Vodafone slashes the price of iPhone 3G
According to Cellpassion, after looking at the response of Indian consumers, Vodafone has brought down the prices by Rs 2,000. Now 8GB iPhone will cost you Rs. 29,000 and 16GB will cost you Rs. 34,000; still costly I have to say. AirTel, till now, had not said anything about slahing the prices of the iPhone 3G but looking at what Vodafone has done, I don't think AirTel would wait too long to slash the prices of the 3G iPhone.
AirTel and Vodafone have started selling the costly 3G iPhone in India. AirTel has even started advertising the iPhone 3G on national television. The ad, which is being aired from last two days shows how an iPhone 3G helps its users to manage Work Calendar, Work Emails and Work contacts. The commercial never highlights the multimedia capabilities of the iPhone 3G or not even the multi-touch interface, which is very surprising. From the commercial it is pretty much evident that AirTel is pitching the iPhone 3G for business users. Is this the right thing cause today's business user of mobile phones demands robust enterprise devices like the BlackBerry or the Nokia E90 or say the Nokia E71 and certainly not the iPhone.
Today has been a bit disappointing day for people in India who were eagerly waiting for the iPhone 3G to be launched in India. Today both, Vodafone and AirTel have come out their pricing strategies for the new iPhone, which will be made available to Indians on August 22nd 2008. Both, Vodafone and AirTel are charging Rs. 31,000 and Rs. 36,000 for 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G respectively. This price is beyond what, people had earlier anticipated for the iPhone 3G. On the top of that, the iPhone 3G that will be sold by Vodafone will be 3G disabled. You have to pay Rs. 10,000 to Vodafone and Rs. 5,000 to AirTel as a booking amount. Just imagine, you pay so much money and then you have to stick to that service provider, the iPhone functions are not that great if you look at it from a mobile phone perspective but yeah, its multi-touch interface is freaking best out there. Many of my friends who were eagerly waiting for the iPhone are a bit disappointed by the pricing that has come out. Many have changed their plans to go for the iPhone and are thinking of spending money on a high-end phone from Nokia or Sony Ericsson that give more functionality. So what do you think would there be as many takers for the new iPhone 3G as the providers would have anticipated earlier?? By the way tomorrow there is a iPhone launch even in the Bangalore HQ of AirTel. Industry experts are saying that in India, 100,000 iPhones will be sold in the coming 12 months, but does this kind of pricing support that forecast. I think the initial hype will push up iPhone sales but then pricing is still a dampener for many and if they don't bring down the price then, Apple, Vodafone and AirTel would certainly miss their forecasts!! One good news is that black market guys are working towards cracking the iPhone 3G and they would price it Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 6,000 lower than that of Vodafone and AirTel.

According to Cellular-News, “The Department of Telecommunications has also fixed the reserve price for the licenses at Rs 160 crore (US$37.6 million) for metros and category A circles, Rs 80 crore (US$18.8 million) for category B, and Rs 30 crore (US$7 million) for C circles. The reserve price for a pan-India license is Rs 2,020 crore (US$475 million).”
BSNL has announced that it is planning to launch 3G services in next 6 months and as you know AirTel is ready with its 3G applications and partners.
