iPhone 4, which was launched recently at the WWDC 2010 by Apple will be hitting the Indian shores in the month of September. This announcement came from Vodafone, I am sure it will also come on AirTel but there is no official announcement from AirTel. Apple had announced that iPhone 4 will hit 88 countries in the month of September but didn't specify if India will be a part of that list. The official statement from Vodafone has confirmed it now. However, there is no official statement on what the pricing will be for the 2010 version of the iPhone in India. Like always it will fall in the bracket of phones that carry a price tag same as that of Laptops these days. Given the pricing of iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 will cost more that 35,000 INR. [Via]

If you have 15$ in your pockets then you can buy a mobile phone. This is not a joke because Vodafone unveiled a $15 mobile phone at the on-going Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Spain. Vodafone V150 will also be available in India at the price point of Rs.700, which makes it the cheapest handset on the block. I guess the moment this device hits the market it will penetrate the rural areas rapidly, which has been a strong playing ground for Nokia. Vodafone V150 has basic features like voice and SMS. Interestingly it also has mobile payment feature. Nokia recently launched its pilot for Nokia Money in Pune along with YES Bank.As you can see the V150 is a dual-band basic candybar shaped handset with 5 way keys for navigation and features like SMS, vibration, ring tones, 110 phone book entries, micro USB connector, torch.

Along with the V150, Vodafone also launched the V250, another cheap handset, which will be priced at $20 or INR 900. The features include,FM radio, stereo headset support, voice and SMS; GSM 900/1800; polyphonic ringtones; vibration; alarm clock; calculator; currency converter; 2 embedded games; memory for up to 100 entries in phonebook and SMS storage; torch; mini USB connector. Both these handsets are bound to change the rules of the game once they enter India. However, few days back Nokia said that, it would soon launch a handset for farmers, which will be priced around INR 500, way cheap than these two guys mentioned above. This handset of Nokia will come under its, Nokia Life Tools program.

6730.jpgNokia has announced a new Symbian S60 powered smart phone the Nokia 6730. Sadly this phone will only be available to Vodafone customers all over the world. The phone features a built-in GPS, A-GPS support, 48MB internal memory, microSD card support, Radio, Symbian S60 3rd Edition UI, no Wi-Fi. The phone also has dual-band UMTS with HSDPA and HSUPA support. The phone will go onto retail shelves in June 2009. [via]

Recently, the Vodafone advertisements have taken the Indian TV audience by storm. These advertisements, created by O&M feature characters called Zoo Zoo and they tell you all the Vodafone mobile services that are available in a very humorous way. Thought these ads look like animation, they are actually not. Check out the all the Zoo Zoo ads from Vodafone below.

You bet they look like animation, but you will be surprised that, its not animation. Now check out the video below, to see how these ads were made.

Vodafone finally launched the Blackberry Storm in India yesterday. Here are two videos that show preview of the Blackberry Storm on Vodafone from ePrice.

storm.jpgWith the news of Vodafone bringing the much awaited Blackberry touch screen, the Storm, confirmed long time back, the operator finally launched the phone in India for Rs. 27,990. The wait is over for all Blackberry lovers who were waiting for this touch screen phone. When this phone was launched by RIM, everybody was making a hue and cry about it being a iPhone killer but let me tell you this phone, though good, is no where an iPhone killer man. The phone will be available to all Vodafone customer from Jan 15th. To get its customers acquainted with this handset, Vodafone will be opening 150 experience zones across the country in their own as well as modern mobile phone outlets, may be like Mobile Store. So what is this concept of experience zone, its like you can go there and handle a live phone and actually experience how the phone will actually function if you buy one. This is a new concept that is rapidly being adopted by mobile phone companies and operators pioneer being Nokia's Experience stores. Vodafone must have been really disappointed with the response it got when iPhone 3G came on Vodafone's network. May be experience zone is part of their strategy where they educate customers about the phone and then these people are more likely to buy the phone. Anyway, coming back to the Storm, its sports an impressive 3.25 inch high resolution clickable touch screen with feedback, 3.5mm standard headphone jack, 1GB on board memory expandable to 16GB with microSD/SDHD card, built-in accelerometer. You will also get lot of cool on-board applications that are built for the Storm like Facebook, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, Flickr Uploader and you can also edit your Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. Blackberry Strom seems to be promising handset. Blackberry in India has always been looked as a handset for the corporate or business people. As Strom has lot of multimedia capabilities, is this outlook of people bound to change? Till date Blackberry is considered to be a handset of e-mail addicts and not mobile Internet addicts. What do you think? Let your thoughts pour in.

BSNL_iPhone

Indian mobile services provider, BSNL would the first to launch its 3G services in India in the month of December 2008. According to some reports and NAMP that came out in the second week of September, BSNL was supposed to launch the 3G iPhone along with the launch of 3G services. The 3G iPhone has really not picked up in the Indian market mainly because of its high-pricing and non-availability of the 3G spectrum and the news of BSNL bringing iPhone on its 3G spectrum is turning out to be false because as of now, Apple has no intentions of tying up with BSNL for the launch of its 3G iPhone on BSNL's 3G services. Apple has already bent its rule of sticking to single player for a country by going ahead in India with AirTel and Vodafone. As we all know what fate the 3G iPhone met in India, I mean people are buying it but it never gained speed in the lucrative Indian mobile phone market. The 3G iPhone mania is slowly dying down in India and now people are looking forward to upcoming phones like the Nokia Tube, Blackberry Bold, Blackberry Storm, Samsung Omnia etc. With the absence of 3G iPhone in its portfolio, BSNL will have tough time luring users towards it 3G services.

According to Indiatimes Infotech, the iPhone 3g will be coming to BSNL by December 2008. The iPhone 3G was launched in India on August 22nd on AirTel and Vodafone. Also, BSNL will be launching its 3G network in India in the month of December same date as the launch date of the iPhone 3G on BSNL. This is really cool, considering the fact that, though Vodafone and AirTel launched the 3G iPhone, there was no 3G network in India to exploit the 3G capabilities of the iPhone and when BSNL launches it in December they would have their 3G network up and running, hopefully. But there is also a news in the market that, 3G network in India will be voice focused and not data focused. Are you kidding me??? 3G has to be data focused so that people can enjoy rich multimedia and internet services on the go. I hope this voice focus of the 3G network is some kind of rumor because Indians don’t want to feel unhappy once again. There is no news on BSNL’s pricing of the 3G iPhone, but I gues it will be less than the price point at which the iPhone 3G was launched initially.

3g iPhone 2The much awaited iPhone 3G was launched in India on August 22nd and the bad days of Apple, Vodafone and AirTel started on the same day. Price of the iPhone 3G was and is one of the biggest factor that had a negative impact on the iPhone launch and the sentiments of the Indian mobile phone user. Non-availability of 3G spectrum, other limitations of the iPhone 3G were some of the other factors that fueled the downtrend of the iPhone 3G in the Indian market. What was Apple thinking when they came up with this kind of pricing for the iPhone. AirTel and Vodafone sold just 1500 iPhones in first two weeks of the launch. This figure is really embarrassing for  a company like Apple who had broke all records with the US launch of the 3G iPhone. iPhone 3G's dismal performance in the Indian market has led these things, which nobody would have imagined:

  • AirTel and Vodafone selling the iPhone 3G on EMI
  • Vodafone lowering down the price of 3G iPhone by 1500 bucks in just one month of its launch
  • AirTel is also rumored to lower the price of the 3G iPhone
  • AirTel will not air any more ads on the Television now and they have told their media agencies not to do anything for atleast coming three months

Just imagine the situation if Apple would have launched the iPhone for 20,000, rest everything would have been history. Anyway, now the damage is already done but one thing is sure that Apple has failed to crack the most lucrative mobile phone market in the world and that is the fact.

Like Vodafone, AirTel has also started offering the pricey iPhone 3G on EMI in India. EMI is one of the options that these players have adopted to increase the sales of the 3G iPhone in India. The high price tag attached to the iPhone is holding buyers from spending so much money on it. Vodafone has come up with financing options for credit card holders of Barclays and Standard Chartered bank and AirTel has come up with financing options for VISA card holders of ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, SBI Cards and Citibank. According to Hindu Business Line, “Consumers with ICICI Bank credit card can purchase the 8Gb iPhone by paying Rs 2,583 a month in 12 installments. In this case, customers will end up paying Rs 30,996 at the end of one year. SBI card holders can buy the phone for Rs 1,654 a month in 24 installments. The 16 GB iPhone, priced at Rs 36,100, can be bought for an EMI of Rs 3,008 for 12 months. There is no upfront payment.”
The iPhone launch was a major flop in India contrary to the hype and crowds it pulled in the US market. AirTel and Vodafone were able to sell not more than 1500 iPhones (Industry Estimate) in the first week of its launch, which is really pathetic. If only Apple would have priced the iPhone 3G in the range of 22,000 to 25,000, just imagine the kind of response it would have got from the Indian market.

Apple and the two service providers have gone wrong with the pricing of the iPhone 3G in India and looking for different alternatives to increase the sales is the only option left with them. Also, the iPhone 3G is now available exclusively through the retail outlets of AirTel and Vodafone, which have limited number of presence, so these service providers will be making the iPhone 3G available through mobile phone reatil chains like, Mobile Store, MobileNXT. These two are confirmed and they would be selling the iPhone by the end of this month or early October 2008.

3g iPhone 2

Both, AirTel and Vodafone launched the Apple iPhone 3G in much pomp and show in India on August 22nd 2008. The launch was a flop given the high price factor attached to the iPhone 3G. People were waiting for it but the high price was a dampener and people were pretty unhappy. But the only guys who are happy with the iPhone's official "high" price are the grey marketers. According to Economic Times, grey marketers would be selling the iPhone 3G at a price point of 20,000 to 22,000, which is pretty much affordable for Indians and they feel that the official price will drive people to them for buying the new 3G iPhone. I seriously fail to understand what AirTel and Vodafone were thinking when they fixed the price of the 3G iPhone for the Indian market. Didn't you guys EVER thought of grey market's existence in India. Who is to Blame???

In its move to tackle the consumer disappointment that happened when the iPhone 3G’s prices were announced, Vodafone has plans to lower down the iPhone prices plus the company has tied up with banks so that people can buy the “Costly” iPhone 3G on EMI, good move. Vodafone has tied up with Axis and Barclays and will make the iPhone available in six or twelve equal monthly installments and ICICI Bank is also on the line to sign a contratc with Vodafone. The banks are also benefiting from this as users have to buy the iPhone using the credit card of these banks only but the interest rate on the credit card EMI will be lower than what they will pay on normal credit card bills. It seems that Vodafone has realized that cost factor attached to the iPhone will hamper the sales and that is the reason the company is coming up with schemes within few days of the launch….is AirTel sleeping or is just overconfident???

iPhone 3G made its debut in India 3 days back on AirTel and Vodafone leaving people sad and unhappy. If you are a mobile phone hacker and you don’t fantasize about hacking an iPhone then your life is waste, this is what they say in the world of mobile phone hacking. By the way with iPhone 3G launched in India, hackers are working towards how to unlock this baby so that the users are not stuck to a single service provider and the phone runs on multiple carriers. According the Engadget Mobile, AirTel has specified that, “Even the most deadly hackers on the planet won't be able to crack the codes that support the iPhone's AirTel applications with rival company SIMs”. Also, AirTel has worked along with Apple to develop operator specific iPhone applications. It seems that, AirTel’s and Apple’s relationship is pretty strong and both the companies are focusing on putting a brake on the proliferation of unlocked 3G iPhones in the Indian Market.

Vodafone slashes the price of iPhone 3G
According to Cellpassion, after looking at the response of Indian consumers, Vodafone has brought down the prices by Rs 2,000. Now 8GB iPhone will cost you Rs. 29,000 and 16GB will cost you Rs. 34,000; still costly I have to say. AirTel, till now, had not said anything about slahing the prices of the iPhone 3G but looking at what Vodafone has done, I don't think AirTel would wait too long to slash the prices of the 3G iPhone.

Image representing iPhone 3G as depicted in Cr...
The iPhone 3G was showcased yesterday by AirTel here in Bangalore at their HQ on Banerghatta Road and today the company is launc9ing it is six main cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata and this number is going to increase to 65 cities across India.
iPhone 3G has dampened the spirits of Indians because of the high cost attached to it. AirTel has said that they are not making any profits by selling the iPhone 3G, they are just selling the network services. The Indian pricing of the iPhone has been fixed by Apple and not the service provider, which I don’t believe. Anyways, but one thing is sure that the service providers will earn a lot of money from the data services they would be providing the iPhone users in India. As you all know that, both, AirTel and Vodafone opened up pre-registrations for the iPhone 3G. According to AirTel they have received more than 200,000 pre-bookings but even they are not sure how many of these people who have pre-booked the iPhone will actually buy one. Is AirTel also thinking that the pricing has let most of the prospective buyers down?? By the way 2G iPhone is already penetrated the Indian market by taking the grey market route and there are 30,000 unlocked 2G iPhones running on AirTel’s own network. Will this affect Apple and AirTel’s relationship in India? Will Apple ask AirTel to shut down these phones? These are some of the questions that keep haunting me.

3g iPhone 2

Today has been a bit disappointing day for people in India who were eagerly waiting for the iPhone 3G to be launched in India. Today both, Vodafone and AirTel have come out their pricing strategies for the new iPhone, which will be made available to Indians on August 22nd 2008. Both, Vodafone and AirTel are charging Rs. 31,000 and Rs. 36,000 for 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G respectively. This price is beyond what, people had earlier anticipated for the iPhone 3G. On the top of that, the iPhone 3G that will be sold by Vodafone will be 3G disabled. You have to pay Rs. 10,000 to Vodafone and Rs. 5,000 to AirTel as a booking amount. Just imagine, you pay so much money and then you have to stick to that service provider, the iPhone functions are not that great if you look at it from a mobile phone perspective but yeah, its multi-touch interface is freaking best out there. Many of my friends who were eagerly waiting for the iPhone are a bit disappointed by the pricing that has come out. Many have changed their plans to go for the iPhone and are thinking of spending money on a high-end phone from Nokia or Sony Ericsson that give more functionality. So what do you think would there be as many takers for the new iPhone 3G as the providers would have anticipated earlier?? By the way tomorrow there is a iPhone launch even in the Bangalore HQ of AirTel. Industry experts are saying that in India, 100,000 iPhones will be sold in the coming 12 months, but does this kind of pricing support that forecast. I think the initial hype will push up iPhone sales but then pricing is still a dampener for many and if they don't  bring down the price then, Apple, Vodafone and AirTel would certainly miss their forecasts!!  One good news is that black market guys are working towards cracking the iPhone 3G and they would price it Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 6,000 lower than that of Vodafone and AirTel.
