Videocon Electronics, one of India’s established consumer electronics players is getting into the business of mobile handsets. Telecom Tiger reports that, Videocon will be positioning itself as a end-to-end telecom service provider and will soon be getting into the mobile handset manufacturing business. There are no details available with respect to what kind of mobiles the company will be manufacturing. Sometime back there were rumors of Videocon buying the ailing handset unit of Motorola, but these rumors died down with time and now it is confirmed that Videocon will not be buying the unit but will have its own handset manufacturing facility. The company Chairman has also conformed that Videocon’s mobile handset manufacturing facility has the ability to churn out 1o million units per annum. By the way Videocon is not doing that well from the past 2 to 3 years and facing major competition from consumer electronics players like LG and Samsung, which are pretty strong in the Indian market. After its announcement to foray into mobile handset manufacturing, it will again face competition from LG, Samsung, Motorola and lets not forget the biggies, Nokia and Sony Ericsson. Also Shahrukh Khan promotes Videocon and if you don’t know, Shahrukh is also the brand ambassador of Nokia in India. It might happen that Shahrukh has to make a choice between Nokia and Videocon.
