This is a very good article on country specific smart phone OS information. Instead of giving my take on it, I have just taken a part from that story and pasted below. Read if you are into smart phones and read even if you are not into it.

"UK - Blackberry (RIM) has shown rapid growth over the past year, and now hold second place in the smartphone market with 23.3% share, below Android on 37.4% but marginally higher than iOS on 22.0%.

USA - In Blackberry's historical stronghold it has lost market share with a drop from 32.5% in the 12 weeks to 13th June 2010 to 12.9% in the latest period. The unprecedented growth of Android is highlighted in the US market as it now holds a 55.1% of the market share.

Germany - Symbian remains the number 1 Smart phone platform, with a 30.5% market share, but this is down from 47.3% one year ago. Android has seen a steady increase in its share of the market, currently at 28.8%.

Italy - The Italian market is dominated by Symbian with a majority share of 49.8%. Apple's iOS and Android are almost neck and neck with 16.7% and 17.2% market share respectively.

France - France has seen tremendous change over the last three months with Android leap frogging both iOS and Symbian to take lead the market with a 32.5% share.

Australia - In October last year iOS over took Symbian for the first time and currently has 29.9% of the market, with Android laying claim to only 29.7%."

Q4 2010 finally saw Android based smart phones overtaking their closet rival Symbian in terms of unit sales. So now Android has become smart phone OS with largest market share. Symbian is second and struggling to keep that position. The main reason behind Symbian experiencing a setback is the advent of smart phone OSs like the iOS, Android and then there is the BB OS, which is becoming mainstream thanks to the acceptance of Blackberry by all types of mobile users. Among all these new OSs, Android had an advantage. It was backed by the Giant Google and also by the Open Handset Alliance. The OHA has some of the world's biggest OEMs and mobile service providers. Two big smart phone players, Samsung and HTC, have shown their commitment to Android is the last one and a half year. Samsung had Symbian as OS on some of its phones but the company realized that they needed something feature rich and open and something that can have an ecosystem of Apps and developers around it. That time the best answer was Android and without thinking twice the Korean giant came up with Android based phones, which did well. Unlike Samsung, HTC phones came with Windows Mobile OS and its popularity and user friendliness is something on which battles can be fought for years. Keeping WinMo as one of the OS on it phones, HTC launched a whole army of Android phones on its own and a couple of them with Google. And with google's backing Android was all over the web, why nt they bloody own the fukin Internet. Companies like Motorola and LG followed after Samsung and HTC to take the Android path. The DROID literally turned luck for Motorola and we saw the Droid 2 and we will soon see more in 2011. The rate at which companies today are churning out Android phones ias amazing, this bloody thing has become like the Facebook of mole OSs. 2011 will definitely see new phones and tablets based on Android and that is something which companies like Apple and RIM are keeping an eye on. So nobody can tell what will happen with Android this year, it will grow for sure but will it topple the leaders is every category or will it be taken head on by some other OS is unpredictable. If you ask me, I am not a mobile guru or industry wizard, I would like to wait, watch and then open my bloody mouth.

top-recent-mobile-OS.pngNielsen reports that Android is the most popular operating system among smart phone users in the US. The data is based on the number of people who bought a smart phone in the last six months. These are August '10 numbers and the second sport fight is between, you guessed it right, RIM's Blackberry OS and Apples iPhone OS. However, if you look at the market share of these OSs, Blackberry is numero uno with 31% markets share, followed by Apple, who stands second with 28%. Android is third in terms of smart phone OS market share with 19%. But if you notice, Blackberry's overall market share is declining while that of Apple is increasing but there have been fluctuations in the past. But Android is showing steady growth from Jan'10 (8%) to Aug'10 (19%).

Like Nokia, all Symbian and Nokia fans are eagerly waiting to get their hands on N8 and other upcoming devices, which will be running on Symbian^3 OS. Nokia is putting forward Symbian^3 as the OS for next generation smart phones, which the company will start churning out from this year, most probably. Symbian^3 looks more or less like S60 5th Edition OS, which runs the Nokia N97, Nokia 5800, N97 Mini and other touch phones from Nokia. But in terms of features and speed, it is mush ahead of S60 5th Edition. With increased RAM size, Symbian^3 enables phones to run multiple applications with speeds and accuracy. There are other enhancements like player updates, enhanced widgets, single tap interface, pinch to zoom etc. But these enhancements are not something that smart phone users are not getting on other phones. Nokia cannot pitch the Symbian^3 OS on these features. They need to come out with phones that has excellent hardware that can make optimum use of Symbian^3’s multitasking features, which will result in customer delight. I think the Symbian^3 OS cannot be judged when it comes out in the market on Nokia N8. May be by the end of next year, Nokia will have more S^3 devices that are stable, fast and give existing and new Nokia users a smart phone experience, they have not got before. Nokia needs to do something like this, to beat its competition in the smart phone race and we should not forget that when Nokia is doing this S^3’s competing OSs like the iOS, Android, Linux based OSs will keep on improving and adapting to better and faster hardware.

Everybody is waiting for Nokia new smart phone OS Symbian^3 to come and Nokia is busy slashing its smart phone prices in India. In the last 5 to 6 months, Nokia's E Series and XpressMusic range of handsets have experienced a significant price drop and Nokia is making these handsets available with attractive offers. Some old N Series handsets like the N79 and the N86 have also experienced a price drop as much as INR 2,000 to 3,000, which is a huge amount in a price sensitive market like India. As a result of this Nokia has also seen jump in their smart phone sales in the last quarter in India as well as over all. Nokia is making sure that it starts building the momentum for its new OS to come, especially after the tough competition its been facing from Apple and RIM. Symbian^3 based devices are likely to be announced in June and will hit the retail stores in Q3 2010.

Tatoo_HTC.jpgThe HTC Hero came to India yesterday and the Android obsessed HTC has again announced the worldwide launch of its newest Android based phone HTC Tattoo, some how I like the names they give to these Android devices. The main push, which HTC is trying to give is that, Tattoo is an full featured affordable Android based smart phone that appeals to the general public. With this handset i guess, HTC wants to put the power of Android and smart phones in the hands of general public. Like the HTC Hero, the Tattoo also has the Sense feature that offers customization, other features include, 2.8 inch QVGA display with resistive touch screen interface, 528 MHz Qualcomm Processor, 512 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM, 3.5 mm standard headphone jack, Bluetooth 2.0, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and a 3.2 meg snapper. The phone is named Tattoo as users can customize the colors and looks of the phone. The pricing of the phone is still under the hood but I guess it will be not too high as the phone is for masses and if the pricing is affordable then HTC should launch this one in India as soon as possible, where pricing is one of the main criteria of buying a phone and affordable Android based phone will be something new for Indian mobile users at least, in big Metros. Check out the HTC Tattoo hands-on video below.

marketshare.jpgAnalysts from the Generator Research think that Nokia, which is the biggest and strongest smart phone market player would see the ground in 2013. According to these analysts, NOkia which enjoys around 40% market share today will have to be happy with 20% by 2013. On the other hand, the research highlights that Apple will gain 33% share of the smart phone market and will leave Nokia behind soon. So come 2013 and you might see the rules of the smart phone market completely changed. Now, the most important question is, Will such thing happen by 2013? Answer is, these things will happen only if, Nokia sits on their asses and does not do anything about their smart phones, which is really hard because every time Nokia is coming up with something new and they play on volumes and have strong hold in European as well as emerging markets. The research analysts must have taken too optimistic projections for Apple and too pessimistic projections for Nokia. [Via] One thing is sure, this report from Generator will certainly do well sales wise, all players would be eager to know what all they have considered to arrive at this conclusion!

SmartPhones 2009.JPGThough many of the mobile handset makers are facing the adverse effects of recession, Smartphone market worldwide has grown in the past 6 months, says AdMob. The demand of smartphones rose from 26% to 33% in Feb 2009. The tops 5 smart phones were iPhone, Nokia N70, Blackberry 8300, Nokia N80 and Nokia N73. Apple was way ahead of the other 4 in terms of share in Feb 2009.

iPhone OS, Symbian, RIM OS, WinMO and Palm were the tops 5 smart phone OS in Feb 2009. Surprisingly, Symbian's market share went down to 43% in Feb 2009 from 64% in August 2008, where as iPhone OS's share went up to 33% in Feb 2009 from just 4% in August 2008. This clearly shows that Symbian is increasingly facing competition from the iPhone OS in the smart phone OS market. And with the new iPhone OS 3.0, which has a host of enticing features and functionalities launched, Symbian might face more tough times ahead. Head over to DigiTimes to read the full report on the Smart Phone market in Feb 2009.

If you have seen Jurassic park, you must have noticed the poor dad caring about three things, his son who is lost, his wife with whom he has got divorced and the satellite phone. The satellite phone helps him a lot in his pursuit for his son and also in getting out of the god forsaken Jurassic Park. Now, this article is not about Jurassic Park or how not to get divorced or how to find your lost son, its about satellite phones. Satellite phone is a pretty useful but pricey piece of gadget that can get you out from the lands of kidnappers and dinosaurs (that’s what they show in movies). The other drawback apart from being pricey is that, satellite phones are pretty big in size with long antennas, almost the size of the phone itself. But now, its time to cheer as a company called Thuraya, has come up with satellite phones that will fit in your pocket. Thuraya is a satellite communications company based in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The company has come up with SO-2510 & SG-2520 satellite phones that are pretty small and will give you connectivity in some of the god forsaken areas around the world, thats cool!!! They are the smallest, lightest phones and that’s the reason the company calls them "the only smart satellite phone in existence".
The Thuraya smart satellite phone SG-2520, is tri-band GSM phone with GPS Navigation and mobile internet through satellite that can reach the speeds of 60/15 kbps.

The SO-2510 is more compact smart satellite phone that supports 12 languages and is made for rugged terrains, so you can take this one to the Jurassic park.

I came to know about their existence from Textually. Thanks guys!!!

ESET are the guys who make anti-virus software for the enterprise. Their software are pretty good and make sure that you are not vulnerable to any attacks. I am saying this as I have sued their software and it is pretty good as compared to Norton, however they don’t come near to Kasperesky according to me. ESET now has come up with a virus fighting software for mobile phones..oops..smart phones to be precise. As people working in the enterprise and corporate sector are increasingly using their mobile phones to be in touch with their clients, vendors and other stakeholders they are also becoming prone to virus attacks. To tackle this ESET, has come with a new anti-virus program for smart phones and PDAs with a feature set similar to ESET NOD32 Antivirus. The Official Press Release from the company highlights says the following things about this new anti-virus software,

  • On-demand Scanning — Contains scanning and cleaning of integrated and exchangeable memory media, and a full memory/running processes scan. Specific folder scanning is included and results are displayed after a scan.
  • Advanced On-access Scanning — Scans all created/used files with enhanced virus detection capabilities at access time. ESET Mobile Antivirus scans incoming files via wireless connections as well (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Infrared).
  • Activity Log — Stores statistics about accomplished scanning tasks and latest database status in a user-friendly format. A variable range of scan results-history is included.
  • Variable In-depth Scanning of Cab Files — Enables users to set the level of cab files scanning to the preferred depth.
  • Automatic/On-demand Updates — Ensures up-to-date protection against all threat types. Users can schedule updates on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Daily updates are set by default, and users are also allowed to switch off automatic updates if they prefer.
  • Intuitive User Interface — Users' experience is enhanced by easy-to-set dialogs and intuitive menu.
  • Compact Updates — ESET's update files are typically a fraction of the size of solutions that are more dependent upon signatures, consuming less bandwidth to the mobile device (this benefits carriers and users).
One thing is for sure that with so much functionality and space you need to have a smart phone with beefed up memory. And yeah this one's available for smart phones running 5 and 6 Versions of Windows Mobile.
Mobile phones have started taking the place of our computers and notebooks and with the launch of a software like these, it is pretty much evident that smart phones is what most of us will be using to stay connected in our businesses.

No more are you a geek if you have a Smartphone as women too are looking into smart phones, at least In India. Everyone from wives too professional woman is taking to Black Berry, Smart Phones, and PDAs etc.
In a Phone men look for Wi-Fi internet more while woman prefer Price, Size and Design. Woman give more importance to keypad on how easy it is to type on it and the speed of typing as women take to time very preciously. Men aren’t considered much about the aesthetics though no one will passé with a keyboard like N78.
As woman like faithful loyal partners, they prefer to stick to their gadgets for long. So they give more Importance to the price factor. Men love changing and updating their gadgets so they aren’t bothered much about the price.
Men give much thought to brand and are highly loyal to their favorite brands. Also men need Ease of Use as they usually multi task their phones. They also prefer touch Screens.
No wonder Iphone would be a huge success in India, once it launches.

Gartner has released the worldwide smart phone numbers for the first quarter of 2008. This market has grown by 29% as compared to the Q1 of 2007, which is huge and shows the growing craze of smart phones. I think, smart phones being available at lower price points also justify this increase. Though Nokia commands 45% markets share in the global smart phone market, it has lost ground to RIM and Apple. Nokia is doing well in the EMEA, APAC and the Lat Am market with US remaining one of its pain points as a result of competition from RIM, Motorola and Apple.
