Nokia’s CEO has given a hint that they are planning to reinvent the company as a company, which will be seen by everyone as an Internet Company. Earlier this year, Nokia changed its organizational structure and created different divisions within the company. When Nokia planned to change their structure starting from Jan 2008, its main aim was to tackle the competitive mobile handset industry landscape. Nokia announced the formation of three groups, Devices, which is responsible for devices that beat competition; Services & Software, where Nokia is focusing on offering of consumer internet services and enterprise solutions and software; and Markets, which is responsible for handling Nokia’s marketing, sales and supply chain related activities. From the last 2 to 3 years Nokia has portrayed itself as the mobile phone company that offers devices that not only enable communication but also bring a host of multimedia offerings, like music, movies, entertainment and Internet. Internet has always been the main focus point for Nokia and this has been emphasized by Mr. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo in the annual share holder meeting of Nokia, which has held yesterday. From his talks it is evident that Nokia is not/does not want to behave or act like a company that manufactures mobile handsets or you can say a pure manufacturing company. Nokia wants everyone to perceive itself as an Internet company. Nokia as a company will be focusing more on initiatives like navigation, location based services, entertainment, music and multimedia, which are becoming areas on which every mobile handset manufacturer is focusing on. Nokia will do less of hardware designing and more of bring these services to people like you and me through the common thing that connects us, the Internet.
