According to a report from Gartner, Worldwide mobile phone sales are on the downside and just 500,000 Nokia N97s have been sold since its launch in June 2009. Gartner Highlights follow,"Nokia maintained its leadership position, but its portfolio remained heavily skewed toward low-end devices. Its flagship high-end N97 smartphone met little enthusiasm at its launch in the second quarter of 2009 and has sold just 500,000 units in the channel since it started to ship in June, compared to Apple's iPhone 3G S, which sold 1 million units in its first weekend. "The right high-end product and an increased focus on services and content are vital for Nokia if it wants to both revamp its brand and please investors with a more promising outlook in ASPs and margins," said Ms Milanesi.
Samsung and LG both had a very strong second quarter of 2009 with sales of 55 million units and 30.5 million units, respectively. Samsung's touchscreen devices, qwerty phones and smart phones drove sales in mature markets, and Gartner expects it will continue to gain market share in the second half of 2009 to close the gap with Nokia. Gartner expects LG to keep moving into lower-tier devices to drive growth in emerging markets and be well-positioned to take advantage of China's 3G roll out as it can deliver good-value-for-money devices. Motorola's sales of 15.9 million units were slightly better than expected, but its presence has rapidly concentrated on the Americas, and it has lost most of its share of the Western European market, where it sold fewer than 1 million units in the second quarter of 2009. Most operators and customers will be waiting for Motorola's new Android-based products planned for the fourth quarter of 2009.
Sony Ericsson's market share dropped 2.8 percentage points year-on-year in the second quarter of 2009 but its volume dropped 41 per cent. Although the market environment was challenging, Gartner attributes Sony Ericsson's poor performance to its uncompetitive range of handsets. "Sony Ericsson has neglected to exploit key trends such as qwerty products for messaging and e-mail, Internet browsing and navigation. If it wants to build the presence of its three new products announced this quarter in the channel and capture Christmas sales, the products need to come to market early in the fourth quarter of 2009," Ms Milanesi added."

Yesterday, Sony Ericsson announced three phones that belong to its Entertainment Unlimited portfolio. Their names are kind of Japanese Anime types, Satio, Yari and Aino. Satio is none other than the Sony Ericsson Idou, the first Symbian Foundation based phone that was showcased by Sony Ericsson at the start of Mobile World Congress. Sony Ericsson also showcased its Flagship Walkman phone, W995 at the MWC 2009 and has launched it few days back. So coming back to yesterdays three launches, Satio, Yari and Aino..don't know why, but these phones sound some thing like a awesome threesome, like the fantastic four.
Sony Ericsson's flagship Windows Mobile based handset, the Xperia X1 cam but didn't do any damage to other Windows Mobile based smart phones and multimedia phones in the market, as it was portrayed to do. Now after the so so performance of the X1, Sony Ericsson is all set to launch the Xperia X. There is a strong rumor that X2 will be launched sometime today or tomorrow. The phone will run on Windows Mobile 6.5, will have one of the most powerful processors around and the graphics chip would be integrated within the processor. Sony Ericsson has launched the much awaited W995 today and the phone will be available across European markets soon. The W995 was launched by Sony Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress 2009 along with Sony Ericsson Idou. Sony Ericsson W995 belongs to Walkman Series of Mobile phones and is a high-end music slider phone. It is a Walkman flagship product for the year 2009. The phone has dedicated music keys, built-in stereo speakers, special stand and a 3.5mm standard head phone jack. Though the phone belongs to the Walkman series, it has a massive 8 mega pixel snapper. The phone will be available in Progressive Black, Cosmic Silver and Energetic Red. I guess, of the three colors, Progressive Black looks the sexiest. 2009 has been a real bad year for Sony Ericsson and the company is in major losses, hope this W995 brings good old days of Sony Ericsson back. Few days back there was a mother of all rumors that, Ericsson was moving out of the Sony Ericsson JV and Sony was buying its stake thus becoming the 100% owner of the company . To everybody's relief, spokesperson from Ericsson, Minako told news sources that Ericsson is strongly committed to the JV with Sony and they do not have any plans as such to abandon the JV. Though Sony Ericsson is going to face huge lossess due to declining sales, both the companies are committed to the JV and we will see more Sony Ericsson phones coming in the future.
This came to me as a shocker. Ericsson, which is one of the JV partners in Sony Ericsson handset business is rumoredly moving out of the venture. I read this at the Boy Genius Report. BGR says, a German magazine has reported that Ericsson wants to pull out its stake from Sony Ericsson and concentrate on its core competency, back-end network, telecommunications infrastructure and Sony, the other JV partner, has expressed its interest to buy Ericsson's stake. I am not sure how true is this rumor but if this happens it will be pretty shocking as Sony Ericsson as a company has launched some pretty good phones till now and an exit from the market like will be surprising. When asked to spokesperson from Sony Ericsson, there were no comments and it was said to be just another speculation. I guess it is a mother of all rumors.
