Nokia files a lot of patents every year, but not many of them actually materialize into products. Still, product companies make sure that they patent their technology so that i can be commercially used later. This time Nokia has filed a patent for pressure sensitive 3-D multi touch screen for mobile devices. The display is multi touch so it will give the user the ability to play around with the screen like they do on the iPhone. You can zoom in , zoom out, slide through smoothly, but the interesting part is that this new touch screen from Nokia will also have pressure sensors. The pressure sensors are able to measure the direction as well as the force of the pressure and it can be configured to perform different actions. Also, this display will only react to finger touch just like the iPhone so stylus's won't work here.
Nokia has been concentrating on its touch screen portfolio from the last 6 to 7 months as it is facing stiff competition from Apple's iPhone. The company has launched touch screen phones at every price range but it is not able to reach a user's expectation who compares every touch screen phone with the iPhone. With the above tech, Nokia can give a new fresh touch screen experience to the user. Using this tech on Nokia's Maemo based tablets like the N900 and the other forthcoming Maemo devices would help Nokia in gaining some momentum in the touch screen race.
What you see above is a patent filed by Samsung for a phone with a QWERTY keypad that comes out like wings from behind the phone. Samsung has filed this patent with the US Patent office. The front screen of the phone is fully touch enabled and the keypads will come out from behind to give a winged look to the phone and you might also look like an idiot using a keypad like that. People might mis-understand you of using some kind of laser gun in the public and they will freak out. So what made Samsung file for such invention, well, there are many phones out there who do not have a physical keyboard and have a large touch screen, which is good to go with your daily use of the phone but according to Samsung there are many needs and applications, which need key input like characters message writing or some gaming applications that might need a lot of keys to be pressed. Samsung's winged creature comes into picture here, as it has a full scale touch screen as well as a QWERTY keypad, which is not cramped up and looks stylish. I still don't like it though!!
Emoticons on Instant Messaging clients are pretty common and there are thousands of them available out there. According to Wired, Nokia has filed a patent for using emotions in an entirely different way. As per this patent a user can transmit his or her emotions long with a voice or text message and when the receiver receives the message a particular color that represents that emotion will flash on their mobile phone. It like adding some special effects to your cell phone messages. The phones software will let you choose mood and corresponding color will be embedded in your message. If you are of the geeky/nerdy kind then you can read through the patent and find out how the system actually works in detail.
According to Phonescoop, Nokia has entered into a deal with Eastman Kodak company under which they have the permissions to access each other's intellectual property. There are lots of speculations in the market regarding the main purpose of the deal. Some are saying that a new handset is into making or something is in store for the Tube. But I feel that, these companies are just skimming through each other's patents and trying to find the best match for each other's products. Nokia is already into an agreement with Carl Zeiss for its N Series mobile devices.

"A portable device may perform a location dependent music search. During the search, the portable device determines location information that identifies a location of the portable device, makes a request that includes the location information to a database, obtains a list of music sources associated with the location information from the database as a result of a search performed based on the request, selects a music source from the list, and outputs an audio signal associated with the selected music source."

Abstract of the Patent: An electronic device has a main body, a flip attached to the main body and multiple input interfaces. A first input interface is disposed on the main body of the electronic device. Second and third input interfaces are disposed on apposing sides of the flip. The flip covers at least a part of the first input interface when the flip is in a closed position. The flip is rotatable so that either the second or third interface can be selectively used when the flip is in the closed position.

I think Nokia does not want to enter into any patent battles as of now especially after the Qualcomm episode. Let’s see how Nokia and Apple handle this issue.
