World's tallest mountain, the Mount Everest, standing at a height of 8,848 meters or apprx. 29,000 feet will soon have a cellular network, thanks to Nepal Telecom. Nepal Telecom, Nepal's biggest telecom services provider is setting up satellite based infrastructure which will enable cellular coverage on the Mount Everest. Earlier climbers use to carry expensive satellite phones during their summits to keep in touch with their base camps. But now with new mobile infrastructure coming up from NT, the Mount Everest will have satellite antennas installed at 7 locations, which will be able to handle 3000 calls at a time. This is a great attempt by a company to conquer the world's largest mountain. Next time the company advertises, they might have a punch line, "Our Cellular Coverage Reaches the Mount Everest, Can you beat that???" [Via]
