December month was important for the mobile communications value chain in India as DoT was planning to set up the auction of the 3G spectrum. This auction has been awaited by OEMs as well as operators but there is a minor showstopper for this auction. Union Communications Minister, Mr. Raja has said that the auction has been postponed to the month of January 2009 and will be completed by Jan 15th and operators would have to make the payments by Jan 31st. I am sure this must be a dampner for many operators, OEMs and also we users. 3G technology has been much awaited in India and roadblocks like this will delay the process more. but when the 3G spectrum auction goes through, BSNL and MTNL would gain competitive advantage over other operators.
