After being beaten by Sony Ericsson last year in the race for the Greenpeace award, Nokia had taken the defeat quite seriously. This year's Greenpeace organization's Guide to Green manufacturing award has gone to Nokia. The Finnish mobile giant has scored 7 on a scale of 10. The main reason behind Nokia getting this ranking was its take-back program in India, which impressed the Greenpeace guys in India. Nokia scores very well on toxic chemical issues, launching new models free of PVC since the end of 2005 and aiming to have all new models free of brominated flame retardants and antimony trioxide by the end of 2009. I dont know what the last two kind of chemical sounding words mean in the previous line but it seems that Nokia has buckled up on all fronts against its competitors. The Greenpeace organization is very much impressed with Nokia's take-back program, which the company runs across 85 countries and they have close to 5000 collection points where the company collects end-to-life mobile phones. The points (out of 10) of other big mobile phone companies stand like this:
- Samsung - 5.7
- Sony Ericsson - 5.3
- LG - 4.9
- Motorola - 3.7
Nokia would be definitely happy after getting this award.
