Nokia_Green.jpgAccording to Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 2009, Nokia is the world's most eco-friendly technology company. The study was conducted in 50 countries and 2500 companies were a part of this study.Nokia support to green and eco-friendly initiatives like manufacturing with recycled components, supporting usage of green electricity, mobile health softwares helped the Finnish giant to grab this award.Nokia earlier has also showcased many phones that show its commitment to green and eco-friendly products. Nokia also came up with its Nokia Remade concept phone last year. This phone has been made up all the recycled materials like aluminum cans, plastic drinking bottles and old car tyres and may be that is the reason it is being called Remade. Nokia's other eco-friendly phones include, the Nokia Eco Sensor Concept and Nokia 3110, which is made of recycled plastic and bio-sourced materials. I am sure these phones must have played a major part in Nokia getting to the first place on the Dow Jones list.

Greenpeace_Nokia After being beaten by Sony Ericsson last year in the race for the Greenpeace award, Nokia had taken the defeat quite seriously. This year's Greenpeace organization's Guide to Green manufacturing award has gone to Nokia. The Finnish mobile giant has scored 7 on a scale of 10. The main reason behind Nokia getting this ranking was its take-back program in India, which impressed the Greenpeace guys in India. Nokia scores very well on toxic chemical issues, launching new models free of PVC since the end of 2005 and aiming to have all new models free of brominated flame retardants and antimony trioxide by the end of 2009. I don’t know what the last two kind of chemical sounding words mean in the previous line but it seems that Nokia has buckled up on all fronts against its competitors. The Greenpeace organization is very much impressed with Nokia's take-back program, which the company runs across 85 countries and they have close to 5000 collection points where the company collects end-to-life mobile phones. The points (out of 10) of other big mobile phone companies stand like this:

  • Samsung - 5.7
  • Sony Ericsson - 5.3
  • LG - 4.9
  • Motorola - 3.7

Nokia would be definitely happy after getting this award.

Now a days majority of the mobile phone companies are going green, whether it be green manufacturing, use of recyclable components, supplier partnerships or supporting some cause or coming out with eco-friendly mobile concepts. Apple, a one year old baby in the world of mobile phones is also going green this time when it will be shipping its 3G iPhone on July 11th. Instead of the phone, Apple’s eco-friendly focus is on the packaging of the iPhone. The packaging will be made of potato starch paper tray. Dutch company, PaperFoam will be making this packaging for the iPhone, incidentally they also supply packaging to Motorola. Last year Steve jobs had promised that this year will see a greener Apple; no he was not talking about changing the logo, but eco-friendliness. iPhone’s packaging is anyways pretty sleek and attractive, now this potato starch packaging will give a high to the environmental police. So this year there is one more company running for the Greenpeace Race, you know who.

Eco-friendly mobile handsets, is the new trend that is catching up among the mobile phone companies all over the globe. Samsung has recently announced that they would be manufacturing a phone that is eco-friendly. Now what is so great about this announcement, nothing except the fact that Samsung will be using corn flour to manufacture the SCH-W510. According to Samsung, “W510 uses natural-dissolved bio-plastic made from corn starch for the battery cover and other parts, according to Samsung. Besides the plastic parts, the company applies other environment friendly materials such as anti-bacterial surface coatings to minimize harmful effects of mobile handsets on the nature and the human body.” It seems that Samsung is trying to set itself apart from other when it comes to eco-friendly phones. But mobile phones from corn starch are some thing I found weird.
