If you think that, when it comes to mobile usage, the BRIC countries follow the leaders like US and Europe, then I think we all are missing something. According to latest mobile usage reports from Nielsen, the research company, mobile devices in BRIC countries are mainly used to access online content that focuses on entertainment, gaming, music and services like email and mobile search. This is very much opposite to users from the US and Europe who like to access sites that focus on postal services, search, news, political happenings, weather etc. This is very much opposite to what BRIC countries are accessing on the mobile Internet. According to Nielsen, Russia's stats look like this,

  • Entertainment - 34%
  • Search - 29%
  • E-mail - 24%
  • Music - 24%
  • Games - 34%

Nokia has teamed up with France Telecom for a joint venture under which both the companies will be providing Internet services in nine countries across Europe. Nokia will be responsible for providing digital mapping for location based services and searches and Orange, a France Telecom company, will provide Orange Mobile Music store. All these services will be available to Orange customers across Europe. Nokia will also be adding ten Nokia handsets to Orange’s Signature line of handsets. The deal will stretch across three years. Now there is one more catch here, Nokia is pretty successful with its N Series and XpressMusic handsets in emerging countries like India and this deal with Orange, will see Orange providing mobile music services. So the ten handsets that Nokia will contribute to Orange’s Signature line can be from its N Series and the XpressMusic range, lets see, time will tell. The image is of an antique “Nokia Orange 2140 Handset”.
