With India witnessing the launch of the new 3G iPhone few days back and then Department of Telecommunications announcing the auction date of 3G spectrum in India, there is a lot of buzz in India about 3G technology. 3G technology is something very much new for we Indians and we all will soon be experiencing it on our mobile phones. Many of my friends and colleagues have asked this question, “What exactly is 3G technology?” and “What makes 3G iPhone different from the previous iPhone?”
What is 3G Technology?
3G is a next generation wireless connectivity technology that offers users high data transfer rates on their mobile phones, handheld devices, PDAs, Notebooks, Portable Internet Devices. The speed at which you can access data using 3G enabled devices is much ahead of what you can do with GPRS or EDGE enabled devices. As the data transfer rates are very high, 3G networks have the capability to offer multimedia content, which is a mix of voice and data. Other features of 3G include, HSPA (High-Speed packet Access) data transmission with an ability to deliver speeds up to 15Mbit/sec. 3G technology is best suited for offering, voice quality telephony, high-speed mobile IP services, information technology, and rich media content.

The new 3G iPhone is better than the old as it offers,
  • More bandwidth, security, and reliability
  • Interoperability between service providers
  • Fixed and variable data rates
  • Always connected to the Internet
  • Uses IP connectivity
  • Access to rich multimedia services
