The biggest enemy of mobile phones in rural areas is no-power. Most of the rural areas get a very interrupted power supply. The case is same with rural areas in Africa and also some of the developing nations. But when you have obstacles like this the DIYer in you awakens and thats what has happened in Kenya. Two young students from Kenya have come up with a smart charger. Smart Charger is a very simple technology that uses bicycle and a dynamo attached to it to charge mobile phone batteries. These students have built this charger with practically no extra cost. They built the charger using pieces of television and radio that were thrown away by people. An hour of riding the bicycle will charge the mobile phone fully. This project is also now backed by the National Council of Science and Technology in Kenya. Rural regions is where the main market for mobile phone lies, technologies like these will certainly help the rural markets in developing countries to gain traction in the race for mobile phones.
