Symbian Found Roadmap.png

Nokia took over Symbian in June 2008 and then November saw the formation of the Symbian Foundation with members like LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. The race to open source mobile OS saw addition of Symbian Foundation along with other open source mobile OSs like LiMo and Android. The first Symbian Foundation prototype handset was showcased by Sony Ericsson just at the start of the Mobile World Congress 2009. Symbian Foundation at the start had said that it would be launching Symbian Foundation based devices at the start of 2010, which I guess might happen as the Symbian Foundation's President David Wood has said that, the Symbian Foundation will be doing two platform releases every year. He further specifies that the first devices running on Symbian^2 will be reaching the market by the end of 2009. It will be based on S60 5.1 version and the second release called as Symbian^3 will released somewhere at the mid of 2010. The first release Symbian^2 will be complete entirely by mid of this year and will be available on handsets in 2009, which also highlights the fact that Idou, Sony Ericsson's Symbian Foundation based mobile handset, was a prototype and did not have the complete Symbian^2 running on it. So things will hot up at the end of 2009 as users and mobile enthusiasts around the world would be eagerly waiting to get their hands on new Symbian^2 based mobile handsets.
