After months and months of wait and getting postponed, the 3G auction in India finally kick started yesterday. The auction for the 3G spectrum was for the 22 circles where 3G will be coming soon. Delhi was the most expensive circle and had a winning bid of INR 373 crores. Delhi has been given spectrum for three carriers and there are 3 operators bidding for it. There is no clarity on who is bidding for what circle but the 3G auction race has some big shot participants like, Bharti AirTel, Vodafone Essar, Idea Communications, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices and some new entrants to the Indian mobile scene like AirCell Etisalat, Videocon Communications and S Tel. AirTel, Vodafone, Reliance, IDEA, Tata and AirCel will be bidding for a Pan-India 3G license.
Now India will soon join the list of countries who have 3G operators. Its not that 3G was not there in India. MTNL launched its 3G services in India in 2008 followed by BSNL in 2009. Still after these launches 3G as a service didn't become popular in India as only two guys were offering it. With the 3G auction kicking off, more operators would be offering the service and now the real value of the 3G enabled smart phones that have penetrated the Indian mobile market, will be realized. Check out the Day 1 Report of the 3G Auction here.
