Not Another Mobile Phone Blog

One of its kind Mobile Phone Blog, that gives you views and news about mobile phones from India and across the world. I am in love with Nokia and their phones but I also write about other mobile guys. Think Mobile..Think NAMP!!!!

OK now I think it is the time that I should write the review of my mobile phone. It been 7 months I have this phone and it’s been more than a year that I am blogging on mobile phones. Now my Nokia 5500 Sport is begging for a review and I have given up and writing this review.

To start with Nokia 5500 sport was launched here in India in September 2006. The phones ads and marketing was real good but the phone didn’t do well in the Indian market. That time I was carrying a Nokia 6610, another good phone from Nokia.

When I saw Nokia 5500 Sports, I was sure that I wanted that phone. Ok so everything done and purchased Nokia 5500. Many people don’t even believe that Nokia 5500 falls into the smart phone category; may be because of its small shape and form factor. The Nokia 5500 is built for all conditions with splash proof, dust proof casing, accelerometer, torch, which is pretty powerful, integrated music player, 2 mega pixel snapper. The phone is called Sports because it has a Sports tracker which works on the motion sensor technology. The sports tracking function of the Nokia 5500 monitors your exercise and displays training data, speed and distance, steps taken, and calories burned

At first glance the Nokia 5500 looks like a normal phone, unless you start using it and get acquainted with its array of features. The phone runs Symbian S60 Third Edition and the menu browsing is much like all the S60 Third Edition models you get these days. The phone is triband with 8 MB user memory, 64 MB SDRAM, ARM 9 235 MHz processor. It supports microSD card upto 1 GB.

Using the Nokia 5500

The phone is easy to use like all the Nokia phones and the user interface is pretty fine. The only thing, which I didn’t like was for such a phone which is high on functions the screen should have been somewhat bigger. The screen size is a major turnoff, but the resolution makes for the small screen size so no issues. The keys are not separated; the keypad is made of one full strip of rubber. While the keypad feels very nice to use, it comes off in 2 to 3 months of use and you have to get in changed. I have heard that Nokia took this seriously and the new keypads that they replace do not come off easily; when I replaced my keypad I have experienced this. There is a lot of rubber and plastic that has been used in this phone.

The back of the phone sports a 2 mega pixel snapper. The camera quality is average, some Series 40 2 mega pixel camera phones are better than this one. The camera has 8X digital zoom which is of no use as such. The battery cover is a screw-in type and can be removed by moving the back screw. This mechanism is very much innovative and is not there in other mobile phones of Nokia. Inside the battery cover there is place for the SIM card and the microSD card. The phone supports upto 1 GB of external memory. But one thing that I have experienced is that the phone tends to get slow once the memory starts filling.

Sports Mode
Apart from calling the other main function of the Nokia 5500 is its sports mode. The phone has an in-built pedometer and a motion sensor. The 3D sensor in the phone will calculate the distance you have run, cycled, rowed etc and also shows you how much calories you have burned and what was your average speed.

One more highlight of the phone is its integrated music player, which can play MP3/AAC/MPEG4 files and the pair of headphones that are supplied with the phone. The headphone attaches to the phone using the standard Nokia pin attachment and will help you in controlling tracks, volume and your call. The headphones have a ear loop like shape and easily fit on your ear. As the Nokia 5500 has a pedometer and motion sensor, you can control the music player by tapping on the left and the right side of the phone. This, at first time looks very fascinating, but I found it useless. But this happens to be one of the USPs of Nokia 5500. The headphone supplied by Nokia is not that bad but the music player sounds good when I used a Sony headphone and with its 5 preset equalizer options that music was great on the Sony headphone.

Ohh by the way did I tell you that Nokia 5500 can read out messages to you..yeah you read it right, the phone speaks and you can choose in whose voice the phone will speak to you, girl or boy. You can also set the phone to read messages by just tapping the phone.

The left side of the phone has the volume control button and the Push To Talk button. The PTT button is not of any use to me as I am in India and there is no PTT service here  So I didn’t actually use this functionality.

The right side of the phone has the infrared sensor and a mode toggling button. This button can be used to move between the standby mode, music player mode and the sports mode. There is one more button on this side with a pencil icon, which when pressed helps you is choosing the number mode, dictionary mode or the alphabets mode when you are typing the message.

The top of the phone has a speaker; which is pretty powerful and can act like a portable music player for a small room. There is also a torch, which is pretty helpful in night.

The bottom of the phone is covered with a rubber flap, which when opened shows you the phone charging and the headphone/data cable socket.

Its been pretty long I have been user of this phone and I found this phone pretty value for money. Highlights being the integrated music player, text to speech and the 3D motion sensor; the things which might turn you off is the keypad, small screen and yeah though Nokia says the phone is dust proof it is NOT!!!! Anyways, if you have a budget of 10,000 to 12,000 bucks buy this phone you will not regret.

I love Nokia 5500 Sport, but some problems with this phone are the Smallish screen size, really eye straining and the CPU is too slow in some times otherwise this is working good...
